Master of Professional Science in Biomedical and Health Informatics

In addition to the University’s required application materials, applicants interested in the Master of Professional Science in Biomedical and health Informatics should review the information below for additional expectations or application requirements.

Background: MPS applicants are expected to have an interest and/or background (from prior education and/or work experience) in healthcare.  Applicants should also have basic technical knowledge/skills necessary to complete the program coursework.  Applicants lacking sufficient preparation may be required to take additional coursework prior to admission.

Application Deadline: The MPS in Biomedical and Health Informatics admits new students during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Statement of Purpose: The statement of purpose for MPS applicants should reflect the applicant’s career goals, how the applicant’s educational background and work experience will contribute to their experience in the MPS program, and how attending the MPS program will assist the applicant in achieving their goals.

Supplemental Document: upload an official WES or ECE GPA evaluation if available at the time the admission application is submitted

International Applicants: If you are an international applicant and have an educational background from an international university, please submit a GPA conversion. GPA conversions are beneficial for the admissions committee to fully understand each applicant’s educational background. We recommend a WES or ECE evaluation. Upload your official evaluation results to your admission application or email them to chipinfo@unc.edu.

PhD in Health Informatics program

In addition to the University’s required application materials, Health Informatics PhD applicants should review the information below for additional expectations or application requirements.

Background: Applicants interested in the Health Informatics PhD program are expected to have some background (from prior education and/or work experience) related to healthcare and basic technical knowledge/skills necessary to complete the program coursework. Applicants lacking sufficient preparation may be required to take additional coursework prior to admission.

Application Deadline: The Health Informatics PhD program only admits new students during the Fall semester. Applicants interested in funding opportunities should apply by the Graduate School Fellowships and Academic Program Aid/Financial Assistance deadline (referenced above) to receive priority funding consideration. Applications submitted after the Graduate School Fellowships and Academic Program Aid/Financial Assistance deadline will not receive priority consideration for funding.

Interview: Interview with Program Director

Statement of Purpose: The statement of purpose for PhD applicants should reflect: the applicant’s motivation for choosing to pursue a PhD, how the applicant’s educational background and work experience will contribute to their experience in the PhD program, the applicant’s research interests, and names of CHIP Core Faculty whom the applicant feels are best aligned to serve as potential advisors for their research. Failure to cover each of these topics in the statement of purpose may result in the application not being reviewed.

Required Supplemental Questions: Applicants are required to respond to the following graduate program supplemental questions. Failure to respond to these specific prompts (located in the ‘Program Supplement’ section of the application) will result in the application not being reviewed by the PhD admission committee.

  1. Financial Award Interest and External Funding – answer all questions that apply to you
  2. Faculty Interest – Identify at least 2 faculty advisors you might like to work with and/or support your application
  3. Supplemental Document – upload an official WES or ECE GPA evaluation if available at the time the admission application is submitted
