Other Requirements

Students entering UNC in fall 2014 and beyond will need to abide by the updated curriculum. Pre-requisite courses are outlined below and core classes are outlined on the SILS website. Please note, students are required to have completed all necessary pre-requisite courses before applying to the IS major. (Pre-requisites are not required for the minor.)

  • INLS 161, Tools for Information Literacy
  • PSYC 101, General Psychology
  • INLS 201, Foundations of Information Science
  • COMP 110, OR 116 Introduction to Programming

Supplemental Documents:

Essay: In a brief essay (100 – 300 words), discuss the role of information (its creation, communication, storage, and/or transmission) in a particular application area or in society at large, and your reason(s) for pursuing the major in Information Science.

Within the application itself, you are required to upload your resume. Letters of recommendation are welcomed but not required.

Transfer students may apply directly to the Information Science major. Any pre-requisite courses not completed prior to applying must be completed during your first semester at UNC.
