In addition to the University’s required application materials, applicants should review the information below for additional expectations or application requirements. A Personal Statement addressing the applicant’s intellectual and professional goals, the place of the applicant’s pursuit of the PhD in American Studies in their projected intellectual and professional trajectory, and what they will bring to program as a member of an intellectual community. A Writing Sample that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to write clear and graceful prose, to conduct original research, and to set forth a critical interpretation or argument. The writing sample should be no more than 10-15 pages in length [Supplemental Document #1 Upload]. The applicant may also submit additional materials, such as academic work in another course or writing that springs from relevant professional activities.
