*** Direct admission to the PhD in Cell Biology and Physiology is only open to applicants with MD or DO degrees who are or will be doing their clinical work/fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill and want to concurrently pursue this PhD degree.  Candidates outside of these circumstances will not be considered for this direct admit program and should instead apply via the Biological and Biomedical Sciences program application.

Transcripts

Applicants must upload unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended at the time of application, including their MD or DO transcript showing date of graduation/degree conferral.

Faculty Mentors

Applicants must identify a UNC faculty member who has agreed to serve as the laboratory mentor. The bulk of this Master’s program is clinical research and the faculty lab mentor is a key component. The applicant should also list 2-3 other faculty that might be a logical fit to serve on the applicant’s Master’s Thesis Committee.

Statement of Purpose

The applicant should write a brief summary (<1 page) identifying the UNC Chapel Hill faculty mentor(s) the applicant has discussed mentorship with and agreed to be the official clinical research mentor. The applicant should briefly and generally describe the clinical research area the student will investigate during the program (a few sentences). Each student should also include any academic department that will be the administrative home department for the applicant’s employment/fellowship/faculty appointment. The applicant should also identify the possible funding sources for the student’s funding and tuition (e.g. T32, K funding, departmental funds, etc.) and with whom in the home department this was discussed. Finally, the applicant should address the number of semesters the student plans to be enrolled in the degree program (typically 2-6 semesters, or 1-3 years for the MS and 5+ semesters for the PhD).
