Prerequisites BIOL 101 & 101L – Principles of General Biology and Lab
ECON 101 – Introduction to Economics
STOR 155 – Introduction to Statistics or ECON 400 – Elementary Statistics

One of the following Financial or Managerial Accounting Courses:
BUSI 101 – Management Accounting
BUSI 106 – Financial Accounting, Continuing Studies
BUSI 107 – Management Accounting, Summer School
BUSI 108 – Management Accounting, Continuing Studies
BUSI 407 – Financial Accounting and Analysis

One of the following Precalculus or Calculus Math Courses:
MATH 130 – Precalculus
MATH 152 – Calculus for Business and Social Sciences
MATH 231 – Calculus of Functions and of One Variable
MATH 232 – Calculus of Functions of One Variable II
MATH 233 – Calculus of Functions of Several Variables
STOR 112 – Decision Models for Business

Special Notes:

  • You must receive a C or better in all the prerequisite courses to be considered for admission to the program.
  • When you complete your application, please clarify which of the BUSI and MATH courses you took to complete the pre-requisite.
  • If you took an Advanced Placement exam to satisfy one of the pre-requisites, please include the score you received on that exam when you complete your application (e.g. AP exam score of 3, 4, or 5)
  • You are encouraged to complete as many prerequisites as possible before applying. If you are offered admission to the program you must successfully complete all prerequisites by the Fall semester.
Required Application Materials
UNC Transcript and any other Transcripts The application system will automatically upload your UNC transcript after you submit your application, so you do not have to do that.

However, if you have attended other colleges, please upload transcripts from those institutions when prompted by the application system. For example, if you spent a year at another college before transferring to UNC, or if you took some courses or pre-requisites for our program at another college, we will wish to see those transcripts. Thank you.

Letters of Recommendation Two (2) letters of recommendation are required.
At least one of your letters should be from someone one qualified to evaluate your academic qualifications. We encourage references from professors or teachers (or teaching assistants) or work/research supervisors who have worked directly and closely with you and who can speak about you with specificity.
Resume A current resume is required. (In addition, the application process for our program that is offered by the University has forms in which you may describe in more detail your work and voluntary experiences, and other activities. This is optional; feel free to complete these if you believe that it helps to explain your interests and experiences.)
Personal Statement  A personal statement (2 pages or less, single-spaced) is required.
Your personal statement should address the following:

  • When/How/Why did you become interested in the BSPH program?
  • What experiences (volunteer or paid) contributed to your interest in the field of health policy and management?
  • What do you feel you have to offer to the program and the field of health policy and management?
  • How do you feel the program will prepare you for your projected career?
Admissions Criteria The Admissions Committee considers the following when evaluating applications:

  • Academic performance, including overall GPA & performance in prerequisite courses
  • Personal statement
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Resume, including work and volunteer experience
  • Interview performance

Strong applicants demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Strong academic performance
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated interest in the field of health policy and management
  • Professionalism and maturity
  • Ability to work well on teams
